Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
World-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck, in decades of research on achievement and success, has discovered a truly groundbreaking idea–the power of our mindset.

Dweck explains why it’s not just our abilities and talent that bring us success–but whether we approach them with a fixed or growth mindset. She makes clear why praising intelligence and ability doesn’t foster self-esteem and lead to accomplishment, but may actually jeopardize success. With the right mindset, we can motivate our kids and help them to raise their grades, as well as reach our own goals–personal and professional. Dweck reveals what all great parents, teachers, CEOs, and athletes already know: how a simple idea about the brain can create a love of learning and a resilience that is the basis of great accomplishment in every area.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time   August 31, 2010

I was referred to this book by a colleague in my efforts to understand the "mindset" of a couple of challenging students. I muddled angrily through the first three or so chapters, yelling at the author for her foolish conclusions and spurious anecdotes, easily contradicting her time after time, and finally ditching the effort.

Anybody who has taken psych 101 will recognize that life and learning isn't this simple. And anyone who feels their life has changed after reading this book is going to need serious talk therapy down the road.

Dr. Dweck has, apparently, a "fixed mindset". Anybody who can categorize all learning and motivation styles into two neat camps is stuck. Period.

Avoid!

5 out of 5 stars A change of mind   July 11, 2010
Deb (Palo Alto, CA)
If there ever was an instruction book on how to do life better, this would be it. And, doing life better requires a change of mindset from a fixed to a growth-oriented one. When we live life with a fixed mindset, abilities and talents seem set in stone, and success and failures define who we are--or are not. On the other hand, when we adopt a growth mindset, we are constantly revising ourselves and successes and failures simply guide the way. As Carol herself summarizes:
"When people--couples, coaches and athletes, managers and workers, parents and children, teachers and students--change to a growth mindset, they change from a judge-and-be-judged framework to a learn-and-help-learn framework." (p. 238)
An effective mix of research, case studies, and self disclosures, _Mindset_ is as informative as it is encouraging. Think of it as an innovative toolbox for rebuilding, revising, and reengaging in strategies for living fully. It is one of those books that changes the way you view--and do--life.

4 out of 5 stars Informative and valuable reading   June 28, 2010

An excellent book for anyone interested in understanding what drives specific types of behaviour in themselves and others. Far from 'pop psychology', it cites numerous academic and real life examples to clearly illustrate complex concepts in an interesting and insightful way. Thought provoking and of practical application in both personal and professional settings, this book demonstrates the power that our internal dialogue and mindset has in all aspects of our lives.

4 out of 5 stars Well done and useful.   June 19, 2010

Wish I had read this book before so many others like it. I found this via the Heath Brothers recommendation from their book 'Switch'. Well-written and practical, much of the material developed here has been well-worn by others. Do yourself a favor and get this first.
