Shirky argues persuasively that this cognitive surplus-rather than being some strange new departure from normal behavior-actually returns our society to forms of collaboration that were natural to us up through the early twentieth century. He also charts the vast effects that our cognitive surplus-aided by new technologies-will have on twenty-first-century society, and how we can best exploit those effects. Shirky envisions an era of lower creative quality on average but greater innovation, an increase in transparency in all areas of society, and a dramatic rise in productivity that will transform our civilization.

The potential impact of cognitive surplus is enormous. As Shirky points out, Wikipedia was built out of roughly 1 percent of the man-hours that Americans spend watching TV every year. Wikipedia and other current products of cognitive surplus are only the iceberg's tip. According to Clay Shirky's new book, Cognitive Surplus, the average American watches twenty hours of television a week. That is a part time job. We watch more television every year, but there is a curious trend occuring; people of the younger generations are watching less. While television provides people comfort, a sense of belonging, even when alone, and it tells stories and helps people pass the time, more people are spending more time creating their own media, contributing to open source initiatives and wiki's, and more. We are experiencing the birth of amazing possibilities that all of this cognitive surplus will bring to the internet and the world.

While Cognitive Surplus talks about the amount of television we collectively watch, Shirky is not commenting on the quality (or lack of it) of those shows that we watch. Rather, he points out the number of hours we sit in front of the television consuming but not creating. However, he does document some of the initiatives that have taken off when people spend less time with the television and more time connecting with people, creating new sites, and allowing individuals to create content. Some of the choices he makes to illustrate his point could be lost on many people, for example lolcats (the most popular site is [...]), but Shirky uses the example well - a simple site that allows anyone to play. The best example is [...] where people contribute their medical history, results from treatments, and more. It is so popular, and the contributions so good, that it is has become the foremost site for medical trials, a support group that the current medical community cannot offer, and a clearinghouse for information and ideas.

Clay Shirky, in Cognitive Surplus, isn't advocating that we turn off the television, however he does illustrate what happens when people find other avenues for their "free time." For the more part, we are creating new communities, connecting with people, and providing new avenues of creativity. Also, it is the younger generations that are leading this inventiveness; they are watching less television, putting more time into the internet and connecting people in new and original ways. What we are seeing, experiencing on the internet demonstrates that "media" is no longer passive. It is producing, consuming, and sharing and it is open to everyone. The individual, or group, that takes a little time to evaluate a situation where others have been provided a canned experience, denied an opportunity, and ask "can we apply cognitive surplus to this situation and make the experience better?" will probably be rewarded for attempting the connections.

While not every advantage of "cognitive surplus" benefits humanity, Shirky spends all of his time providing positive anecdotes, while ignoring some of the "darker" aspects of internet collectives. However, his optimism is contagious; he sees the internet as a place for unbridled innovation and his examples reinforce that point. If you have read Shirky's previous book, Here Comes Everybody, where he talked about the power of leveraging the crowds, Cognitive Surplus is an excellent follow-up. After leveraging the crowds, the next step is to harness that knowledge, and time, to create new, interesting, and wonderful collaborative web sites. Our imaginations will provide new opportunities and the internet will provide the means to deliver creativity, sharing, and participation.

Someone suggested I read Clay Shirky's new book, Cognitive Surplus on crowdsourcing given my work in the field. I have to say that I am underwhelmed.

While he talks a great deal on an esoteric level about crowd movements and this conversation is certainly worthy of a thought leader, he offers no pragmatic research or personal experiences building such movements, which would create a first hand understanding of social motivations within groups. Further, based on my personal experiences, this book fails to grasp the trials of actual movement building and community development. While certainly a good chew for arm chair cowboys, I wouldn't recommend this to read to practicioners.

This is the first Shirky book I've read...didn't know the gems I was missing. "Cognitive surplus" refers to the spare energy we have available to do things that we find rewarding -- things outside of our work and personal obligations. Don't be put off by the academic sounding title. The book balances thoughtful ideas about how we use social media with enough history and context to fully appreciate them. It's also dotted with terrific examples that are fresh and fitting, not "forced" as in some books.

If Shirky tells a story, you can bet it will have more than passing relevance and interest. And because he's a good writer (with a good editor!) you can appreciate his knowledge and expertise in a kind of effortless way. Shirky pulls from many places to make his points and seems especially keen on social psychology. As a result, he does more than tell us what's happening with social media...he always looks to help us understand "why" and what may be underpinning how people act. I really appreciated that.

If you're looking for some ideas and inspiration for how to tap into the outpouring of our collective cognitive surplus, this is a terrific book for that. Ditto if you just want to better understand what's shaping the broader trends in social media. Just know that it's not a how-to book. It's a mix of depth and scholarship with a lighter touch, for folks who like to read between the lines and make their own connections. If that sounds like you, you'll likely find plenty here to work with!

I loved Shirky's first book, Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing Without Organizations, and given Shirky's reputation, I had high expectations for the second. That said, I was occasionally a little bit disappointed: I wanted something that delved a little deeper into the machinations and psychology of these communal groups, but I instead felt like much of this book focused on "Look, we can now communicate online," and offered a repository of Shirky's stories of online communities. That said, this book was still fabulous. Between the lines, and reading into the information Shirky shares, there's a wealth of ideas and thoughts to consider. I wish I'd had it on Kindle, just so I could mark the book up and return to the many interesting quotes and observations later on. Shirky is definitely a well-deserving thought leader in this area, and I would highly recommend that you read this if you have any interest whatsoever in online communities.

Every revolution is anchored in a new language and a new philosophy. Shirky's book attempts to provide these necessary attributes to the ongoing revolution in social media. But is this a revolution? Is this a paradigm shift? Can we distribute information without a pricing model which relates supply to demand and governs the distribution of scarce goods and services? When we peel away the surface layer of free cognitive surplus, do we discover conventional for-profit motivation as these producers of software and providers of content monetize their efforts? Is this book predictive or merely an attempt to describe and rationalize an economic and social bubble?

These are the questions you should ask yourself as you read this wonderful book which describes a world undergoing transformation in the production and consumption of information, a world witnessing a seismic change in interpersonal relationships similar to the introduction of the printing press in 1450's. The book is informative and inspirational as it recounts how smart phones allow the small energies of many people produce structural changes in societies.
