Best big black moment EVER July 15, 2010 Norah Wilson (New Brunswick, Canada) I'm a huge fan of Pamela Clare, so I knew I wouldn't be disappointed (and I wasn't). What I didn't know was that the big black moment -- that moment when it looks like all is lost and the lovers can't be together -- was going to blow me away. I cried my eyes out. Quite possibly the best black moment in any contemporary romance I've ever read.
Awesome! June 3, 2010 E. Hull I love Pamela Clare and this is one of her best. Excellent book! Just enough romance and suspence. She sure knows how to write.
GREAT ADDITION TO THE I-TEAM May 28, 2010 BrooklynGirl (Brooklyn, NY) I read the first i-Team book and was a bit turned off but books 2 & 3 had me hoping that this author would continue to turn out well developed, HOT, rich stories. In Naked Edge, she has kept up her great style of writing. What I like most about Ms. Clare is that each book is very different. Though focusing on a team of smart, focused, die-hard award-winning journalists, each H & H is very different, their likes, dislikes, how they live, their backstories all read as if they are separate and independent. This is a rare feat for many authors to pull off.
***SPOILERS AHEAD***
In a nutshell this book is about Native American Katherine James a sheltered but strong member of the i-team who walks straddling 2 worlds: that of the one she was born to as a Native American on a reservation and that of a caucasian woman (thanks to her mother's failed affair with a white man). In spite of being from 2 worlds and never feeling solidly a part of either, she is a great reporter and when her traditional customs and Navajo faith is threatened by way of a death of a close friend and a looting of an ancient burial site. Kat goes full bore reporter and it's on! She is not going to let anything stand in her way of getting to the truth. Enter Gabe Rossiter who is a man-whore to say the least. His whorish ways are the result of a deadly betrayal by his deceased fiance, he has decided to let his winky do the walking and talking and while he feels that he is living a perfect life, it takes Kat and her ability to see beneath to the man he was to bring him to heel. Now the clincher in this book is that kat is a virgin. An alien species as far as Gabe is concerned but when a near death accident and fate brings them together, it appears faith ain't letting them separate. That is the fun part of this book.
The laugh out loud parts are the times when Gabe is talking to himself in his head. That as well as the proximity of Kat to Gabe engages the readers in some pretty hot and hysterical banter on Gabes part and a nice and fresh approach as Kat's libido is awakened. I found it nice to read about a "virgin" in a age where every heroine is either too experienced, experienced with losers or suffering from some type of trauma. Another strong feature of the book was the way Ms. Clare integrated the cultural viewpoint into the core of the plot. That combined with her almost historical like precision with which she referenced native culture (without letting it drag the plot like a boat anchor) made this book a top read.
The downside. It just got a bit tooooooo weepy toward the end, too soulful, too Dances With Wolves, (I am sorry, but if a murdering fool is dragging my butt up a mountain to kill me then that would be NO to singing some native american nursery rhyme) Also I felt that the loss of the body part was just not necessary nor giving up ac, running water and an epidural to live part of the year in a Hogaan. It was as if Ms. Clare was intentionally taking a real good job and wrecking it.
In any event, I am looking forward to the next one in hopes that we'll see Holly's story at some point. But great read, good effort, good buy.
Best of the series! April 26, 2010 tudi (nebraska, usa) I loved this book. I thought it was the best of the series so far. I don't think anyone who has read the other three will be disappointed. However, this book could also be read as a stand alone with no need to read the the series in order. I enjoyed this book and will definately be waiting for the next one to come out.
Reviews are better than the book! April 20, 2010 Baglady 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought this book because of the very, very positive reviews and unfortunately I did not enjoy this book as much as the reviews.
The narrative is so repetitious its unbelievable. I kept reading because I wanted to see if the bad guy was who I thought it was... It was! I can't say that all of the previous 4 and 5 star reviews are wrong because we readers are as different as our opinions, but after reading the same lines over and over and over again, I was ready to call it a day.
The characters were well defined and I liked them both. However, it was really weird that a Navajo woman (a virgin) who is trying to live in the modern world but keep her Navajo values would give up said virginity to have unprotected sex! Not just the 1st time but all the times after. There are several authors who are writing about lovers having unprotected sex and making it all very pretty and romantic; and the consequences of such an act can be life altering (this is not a PSA but let's get real)!
Everytime I read that the men (the hero and friends) "ducked down" to kiss their women I was knocked out of the narrative to the point that I was tempted to start counting the number of times the author used that phrase. I resisted.
The info regarding the Dine was interesting but overflowing. There are 3 or 4 law enforcement agencies involved and yet not a single person could come up with anything useful in solving the crimes.
The 3 stars are solely for the tears that came to my eyes when reading everything that came after the climatic scenes in Vail. Beautiful!!! When the guy falls in love, he falls hard (pun intended)!
The secondary characters (previous heroes) are very interesting especially if the reader has not met them before. I really don't think that I'm going to buy another of this author's books but Julian Darcangelo might change my mind.
